Games I Play: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Earlier this year I sat down to play what had been described to me as “The Lost Odyssey sequel we wanted, but with baguettes”. Needless to say I was excited. Final Fantasy was never quite the same after Hironobu Sakaguchi left after Final Fantasy X. Even though Mistwalker’s Lost Odyssey was a fantastic game, we are many that have been waiting for a modern take on what Final Fantasy once was. A grand story that tugs at your heartstrings set in a unique fantasy world with memorable characters and turn-based combat.

That’s what I hoped Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 would be. Luckily, that’s also what it is.

Games I Play: Trails of Cold Steel III & IV

Since you’ve read this blog before, you might know that I played through the first and second arc of Falcom’s Trails series and also started the Cold Steel arc. Earlier this year I finished Trails of Cold Steel III & IV, the last two games of said arc, and now I’ve finally found some time to write down my thoughts on them.

In other words, it’s time for another Trails edition of Game I Play!

Games I Play: Metaphor: ReFantazio

It’s not every day Atlus develops a game and it’s a new IP. The last time they tried something new was Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore in 2015, but it’s honestly more of a one-time crossover. You’ll have to go all the way back to 2011’s Catherine to find a new IP from Atlus.

What I’m trying to say is that Metaphor: ReFantazio is Atlus finally trying something new that isn’t Shin Megami Tensei, Devil Summoner, or Persona. After finishing it I can confidently say that the result is… well… a game that’s quite similar to Shin Megami Tensei, Devil Summoner, and Persona.

Is that a problem? No, not even slightly. In fact, Metaphor: ReFantazio might just be the best damn video game I’ve played this year.

Games I Play: Astro Bot

I was lucky enough to get a PlayStation 5 pretty early in its lifecycle. Apparently I was a “top customer” at a Swedish online game store so I got to pre-order an early batch. I guess it pays to be really careless with money.

Anyway, with this PlayStation 5 came the game/tech demo Astro’s Playroom. Imagine my surprise when it was actually fantastic! Great controls, fun use of the DualSense, pure platforming joy, and lots of PlayStation callbacks. Now, with Astro Bot, we have a standalone game in the same vein and it’s even more fantastic.

Games I Play: Baldur’s Gate III

Like most of the people who like RPGs, I’ve been playing Baldur’s Gate III. It’s a sequel to the genre-defining Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II but I don’t particularly care about that since I’ve not played either of those games. It’s also by Larian Studios who made Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2, and this is huge because I loved those games. So did it live up to the hype?
